In recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, Fairchild’s LGBT committee is hosting several events.

During the month of June the committee will be hosting a Color Run and educational rally, and a discussion panel to share the cultural differences of the LGBT community.

The Color Run and Rally is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 3, at Miller Park and the discussion panel is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 7, at the Red Morgan Center.

“The Color Run is a free kick-off event for the month,” said Tech. Sgt. Kody Parsons, chairman of Fairchild’s LGBT Special Observance Committee. “It’s a way for the committee to talk about what else is going on throughout the month so people can stay involved.”

There will be prizes for the fastest runners in five age groups. The discussion panel will be comprised of service members with various times in service to speak about the cultural shift they have seen in the past 20 years, said Parsons.

“The idea of the discussion panel is to look into the past and present of the military culture in regards to the LGBT community,” said Staff Sgt. Amanda Sampson, a Fairchild LGBT committee planning member. “We want to give people an opportunity to hear people’s experiences prior to ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and after its repeal.”

The panel is going to be a positive way for people to get educated and ask questions they may have, said Sampson. If someone doesn’t identify as LGBT and may not necessarily know about the experience, this is a good way to ask questions and learn.
