Fairchild Airman wins 2018 American Legion Spirit of Service Award

A Team Fairchild Airman was awarded the 2018 American Legion Spirit of Service Award at the annual American Legion Department Convention June 19.

Airman 1st Class Nicholas Loew, 92nd Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Distribution specialist, was presented the award for his extensive community involvement on and off base.

The American Legion gives the Spirit of Service Awards annually to members from each branch who excel in their performance on-duty and are actively involved in their local community.

“I started volunteering with my parents when I was younger,” Loew said. “Since then, I have found joy in serving others and making them happy. It has taught me to give to others besides myself. I have been blessed with so much; it’s only fitting that I give back.”

A commitment to the local community led Loew to selflessly volunteer in 33 separate events, for a total of 364 hours. He also rallied nineteen volunteers to serve over 3,000 dinners to those less fortunate at a local homeless shelter.

“A1C Loew is absolutely deserving of this recognition,” said Chief Master Sgt. Monita McCowan, 92nd LRS superintendent. “His support to on and off base activities has been extensive. Since Loew joined the Air Force in February 2017, he has a long and storied history of serving his community [and] his country and has embodied the essence of Airmanship from day one.”

Team Fairchild leaders champion Airmen to continue to meet and exceed the Air Force’s core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.

“The betterment of one’s self is often found through the betterment of someone else,” McCowan said. “As senior enlisted leaders, it is our job to groom future leaders and instill a sense of servant leadership. Encouraging Airmen to give back to their community is one way to create the intuitive foundation of assuming responsibility for the needs of others and prepare our Airmen for future supervisory and leadership roles.”
