New commander takes reins of MDOS

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  Lt. Col. Cory Middel assumed command of the 92nd Medical Operations Squadron from Lt. Col. Dane Campbell during a ceremony June 21 at the Red Morgan Center.

The 92nd Medical Group commander, Col. Margaret Carey, was the officiating officer for the ceremony.

Middel joins Team Fairchild after a tour at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, where he was the commander of the 633rd MDOS Physical Medicine Flight.

Campbell leaves the 92nd MDOS for a position at U.S. Air Forces Europe headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, where he will become that major command’s mental health consultant.

“I am humbled and honored to be your commander,” Middel said, addressing his new squadron. “I am already overwhelmed by the professionalism and positive attitudes demonstrated by those of you I have met. You have accomplished much for our Air Force and Fairchild over the past year; improving access for patient care in all your clinics, acing accreditation and effectiveness inspections, and pursuing multiple initiatives to support and enhance the health and performance of your Team Fairchild mission partners. You have overcome manning and resource challenges, building renovations, deployment taskings and a high ops tempo, and continued to provide highly reliable and trusted care to your beneficiaries, consistently producing customer satisfaction ratings which set the example for Air Mobility Command peers.”

Middel referenced one of the major challenges facing the 92nd MDG in the year ahead.

“There are exciting challenges ahead as you have been chosen to be the Air Force’s test site for the Department of Defense’s new electronic health record. And we must continue to innovate, be flexible and adaptable, and build our skills so that we are ready to answer the call when our nation needs us in the future. I have confidence that, together, we are up to the task.”

Middel commissioned in 1998 and has deployed as Physical and Occupation Therapy Element Leader of the 332nd Expeditionary MDG at Joint Base Balad, Iraq; Medical Support Team Leader of the Health Support Outreach mission to Indonesia; and most recently as commander of 332nd Expeditionary Medical Support in Kuwait. Middel is board certified in orthopedic physical therapy and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy.

His decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster and an Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

Middel holds a Master of  Science in Physical Therapy from the U.S. Army-Baylor University in Texas.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.
