Firefighters from the 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron hand out goodie bags to Team Fairchild families as part of the Fire Prevention Week Carnival Oct. 12, 2016, at Fairchild Air Force Base. Fire Prevention Week was started in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. The fire killed 250 people, left 100,000 homeless and burned more than 2,000 acres. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the Great Chicago fire drastically changed the way the public and firefighters think about fire prevention.
