FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash.- --  While the new trend of "thrifting" blossoms around the states, some members of the Fairchild community might not realize that Fairchild has its very own thrift shop right here on base.

Being a non-profit organization run by the Officer Spouses Club, the base thrift shop offers families a selection of high quality items at a low cost.

The store also offers the opportunity to sell items on consignment.

"Money that comes into the thrift shop is given back in scholarship form to military dependents and high school students," said Catherine Messer, OSC president. "These can be applied for through the OSC website at www.fairchildosc.com."

Funds raised are also donated back to different organizations around base.

"Giving back to the Fairchild community is one of the best aspects of the store," said Messer. "The thrift shop is open to anyone and everyone with base access and is a great resource for military families and young Airmen."

The store is open Tuesdays from 12 - 5 p.m. and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at building 2447 in suite 333, near the outdoor recreation office.

Donations are accepted anytime during open hours.

"Items that don't get picked up over some time are donated back to Goodwill or even the Airman's Attic," said Kristina Sherman, member of the previous management team. "We have everything from clothing and household goods to electronics and children's toys."

With one manager, the remaining workers are there on a strictly volunteer basis.

"Volunteers are always needed," said Sherman. "The volunteers are vital to the mission of the store and do everything from working the register to organization and help with consignments."

Sherman said that they appreciate the support they have received from the Fairchild community so far and hope to get the word out further about the store.
