Funspot Recreation Center closes amid structural concerns Published Oct. 7, 2016 By Airman 1st Class Sean Campbell 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- The 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander closed the Funspot Recreation Center here Oct. 6, due to rising concerns of the building’s structural integrity. “The safety of you and your families as we execute our vital missions is my top priority,” said Col. Ryan Samuelson 92nd ARW commander. “Anything less is unacceptable.” Other buildings that were connected to the Funspot have already experienced structural failure and have collapsed, leading to greater concern that the Funspot may follow suit. In 2015, the wing hired an independent civil engineering firm to determine the long-term sustainability of the building, specifically the roof. The concern came after the release of a building survey, depicting multiple aging components, which secure the roof to the building. “Our [civil engineering] team reviewed the completed report… [which] indicated an unsafe condition with significant risks exceeding the benefits of maintaining operations in this facility,” said Samuelson. With the added dangers associated with rainfall, winds and snow approaching, Samuelson said he personally made the decision after consulting subject matter experts from across the base. Those with events at the Funspot should have already been notified of its closure and should contact the 92nd Force Support Squadron at 247-5484. Scheduled activities will be relocated or canceled. “Having an on base morale facility and support of our (non-appropriated funds) activities is critical for us; our team is aggressively working to relocate what activities they can to other facilities and venues,” Samuelson added. The Funspot will be closed at least until the end of winter. More information will be released as it becomes available.
