September is National Preparedness Month and Team Fairchild had a unique way of helping units prepare for the unexpected this year with the first-ever Amazing Zombie Race held Sept. 22, at Miller Park.

Four-person teams competed against each other to complete basic preparedness and survival challenges, while also escaping the undead.

There were five different stations across the base, each team had to race to each station and complete an obstacle while avoiding zombies. The different obstacles included a preparedness quiz, putting together a 72-hour kit and self aid buddy care administration.

The zombies' goal was to hinder other unit’s teams while clearing a path to victory for their unit teams, said Master Sgt. Shannon Lynch, 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management.

The event was put together by the Emergency Management office and will continue to be held every year for National Preparedness Month. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare makes any crisis more manageable.

A few tips include: Get a Kit - Assemble a collection of first aid supplies, food, water, medicines and important papers that can sustain you and your family until the emergency passes.

Make a Plan - You and your family members may not be together when an emergency strikes. Planning ahead will improve your chances of keeping in touch, staying safe and quickly reuniting.

Be Prepared - Anticipate emergencies most likely to affect you and your family. Wildfires, severe weather and earthquakes are more likely to occur in this region.

“Due to the unpredictability of disasters, preparedness is the key to success,” said Chief Master Sgt. Shannon Rix, 92nd Air Refueling Wing command chief. “September is recognized as the National Preparedness Month; however, preparedness is a year-round activity and enables our Airmen and their families to better respond to disasters. The more prepared we are as individuals, families and communities, the quicker we, as a team, will recover!”
