Every year the Defense Commissary Agency gives out scholarships for military children under the age of 23. This year five were awarded with the scholarships. Two of them were recognized during a ceremony on June 29, here.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community.

“This past year there were over 4,500 applications. Out of that, our store had about 45 applications and we had five winners,” said Eric Quantock, Fairchild Commissary store director.

To apply for the scholarship, applicants must be unmarries, under the age of 23 and a dependent of an active duty, Reserve, Guard or retired military member. They must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a full-time undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall.

Of the five local winners, Everett Plotner and Audrey Cosgrove attended a short ceremony to be recognized as the scholarship recipients. They are both high school seniors planning to attend college full-time in the Fall. Taylor Fritz, Haley Hogberg and Charles Mitchell were not in attendance but also received the scholarships.
