Keep the weight off this holiday season Published Nov. 19, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Samantha Krolikowski 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Before grabbing that second slice of pie this coming holiday, try going on a walk first. As we spend time with our family and friends this season, putting in an effort to participate in some form of exercise can help prevent weight gain over the holidays. "Airmen can incorporate some type of movement, whether it's going on a hike or taking their dog for a walk," said Will Saultes, the 92nd Aerospace Medicine Squadron Health and Wellness Center health promotion program coordinator. For many Airmen, the cold of Washington may be new to them. But there are several outdoor activities they can participate in during the winter months. "Airmen can still partake in the outdoors by going snowboarding or skiing," said Allison Kresser, the 92nd AMDS, HAWC dietician. Not only can exercise help keep Airmen fit, eating a good amount of healthy foods, like fruits and veggies can help prevent weight gain. "If you have a little bit of everything on your plate, try and reduce the intake of sugars," Kresser said. "Replace starches with more fruits and veggies." Another way Airmen can stay healthy is by setting a baseline and having goals. "Having goals can give someone something to strive for," Saultes said. "While working on these goals, make sure to progress forward." "Documentation, such as pictures or measurements can be helpful and encouraging while trying to attain your fitness goals," Kesser said. So instead of sitting at home in front of the Television all day, get outside, go to spin class or even go snowboarding. Outdoor Recreation offers ski trips throughout the winter season.
