Fairchild's Finest: Senior Airman Naomi Haney

  • Published
Fairchild's Finest is a weekly recognition program that highlights top-performing Airmen.

Rank/Name:
Senior Airman Naomi Haney

Unit of assignment:
92nd Contracting Squadron

Duty title:
Contracting Specialist

Hometown and state:
Burlington, North Carolina

What do you do on a daily basis at Fairchild AFB?
I administer contracts for various services and commodities for our customers. I make sure even after the contract is awarded, that the customers have received exactly what they need for their unit and that everything goes smoothly.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the end results our contracts bring to units across the base. Especially in service contracts that involve carpet or shelving installation, I can actually see the impact my efforts have on each unit. It's rewarding to see all the different companies on base knowing that they are here because of contracting. It's also rewarding to know that not only does the Contracting Squadron save the government money but, in turn, we are saving taxpayers' money.

Why did you choose to serve in the military?
I chose to serve in the Air Force because I wanted to be independent and have opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to get otherwise. I joined because I wanted to feel committed to something that is bigger than myself, and I couldn't imagine my life outside of the military.

Time in military:
23 months

What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is being physically fit, and making it a lifestyle. Recently I ran a 9.5 mile Spartan Race with my husband and finished 18th out of several hundred competing in my age group. I have recently sewn on senior airman below-the-zone. I consider this one of my greatest accomplishments as well.

Goals you want to achieve or meet while at Fairchild AFB?
I am eligible to test for staff sgt. this cycle, so I would love to end up sewing on at my three year mark which will be next year. Later on down the road I'd like to obtain my Level I and then Level II certifications in contracting. I want to finish my Community College of the Air Force and continue on to my bachelor's. I would like to take advantage of the Survive Evade Resist Escape course they offer here and attend the U.S. Air Force survival school.

Your best habit:
I would have to say my best habit is always having goals I set for myself and having self-discipline so that I can achieve these goals. In the back of my mind I know exactly what I want out of everything; I give 100 percent in all that I do.

Favorite quote:
"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." -Dr. Seuss.

Who is your favorite mentor and what did you learn from him/her?
My husband Kyle is my favorite mentor. He has helped me learn to always believe in myself and that I can do anything I set my mind to. He has helped me become more confident and always motivates me to be a better person, physically and mentally.

If you could spend one hour with any person, who would it be and why?
If I could spend one hour with any person it would have to be my Grandpa John. I was unable to say goodbye to him and I didn't realize how awesome a person he was until after he passed away last year. I would love to have gotten to know him better. He was a missionary and a pastor. He always put others before himself; it would be neat to have that kind of influence in my life, even for just one hour.
