FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- The Fairchild Tax Center had another successful year helping Airmen file their taxes to maximize the most out of their returns.
Although not all Airmen were entitled to a return, the tax center helped Airmen receive $152,967 in federal returns and save $15,407 in preparation fees.
The success of this tax season would not have been possible without volunteers. This year, 40 Airmen donated their time as volunteers to help the program. Violet Lincoln, retired U.S. Navy, joined the tax center this year and volunteered completely in her free time. She programmed the base's tax software while simultaneously reviewed and troubleshot approximately 70 returns resulting in zero audits.
The Tax Center offers some tax facts:
1. Seven states don't have an income tax and include Florida, Tennessee, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Washington, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada and Alaska. Some other states don't tax military pay of their residents.
2. W-2 withholding determines the amount of the return. Sometimes getting back a large sum of money can mean withholdings need just as much adjusting if paying a large sum of money. It's all a matter whether you want the money in your paycheck, or back during tax season.
3. While unfortunately our tax center does not extend beyond April 15 each year, deployed personnel qualify for an extension on the filing of their income taxes. Also, if you deployed within the last fiscal year, look for a "Q" on your W-2 to see how much of your income tax is exempt.
