Airmen deliver diapers to Spokane crisis nursery

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Airmen from the 92nd Medical Group delivered nearly 1,500 diapers, formula and other supplies to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane, Washington, June 17.

The annual diaper drive was part of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April. The national event encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making a better place for children and families.

"It's events like these that can really make a difference in a child's life," said Wanda Elder, 92nd Medical Group Family Advocacy program assistant. "They may have been out of diapers and formula, but they certainly weren't out of love or people who care for their very important mission."

The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery provides a haven of unconditional love and attention from adults whose goal is to create lifetime memories of security. The nursery is named in memory of Vanessa Kay Behan, a Spokane girl who died of child abuse related injuries at the age of two. Since opening their doors in 1987, the clinic has cared for more than 81,100 children and been a life-line of support and hope.

Elder said these donations enhance Fairchild and the community's partnership while taking care of people - most importantly, children.

"They know we're here for them and that we're always going to support them in every way we can," she said.

The Airmen volunteers exceeded the program's goal and doubled the number of diapers and supplies donated last year.

"This year was a testament to our commitment to the community, and supports our mission to build community health and resilience," said Ruth Sunde, 92nd MDG Family Advocacy outreach manager. "Next year, we'll raise the bar again!"
