Col. Brian McDaniel, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, signed the Fire Prevention Week proclamation Oct. 1.

Fire Prevention Week lasts from Oct. 4 to 10. It commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people and destroyed more than 2,000 acres of property. This year's focus is on smoke detector installation in the bedrooms and encouraging everyone to "hear the beep where you sleep."

In 2013, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 369,500 home structure fires causing numerous deaths and injuries. Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. Three out of five home fire deaths occur with no smoke alarms or inoperable smoke alarms.

Military members and their families are asked to install, maintain and check their smoke detectors by following the "once a month, once a year, once a decade" rule, check the operation of the smoke detector once a month by pressing the test button, change the batteries in the smoke detector once a year, as a minimum and replace the smoke detectors once every 10 years as they also have a life span.
