SFS defeats SERE 35 to 21, locks down championship title

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  The atmosphere filled with cheering and sirens as the 92nd Security Forces Squadron battled Airmen assigned to the 336th Training Group, better known for the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training school, in the intramural flag football championship game Sept. 30, 2015, at Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash. If the noise wasn't enough to pump up the crowd, an interception thrown by the SERE team within mere minutes of the start of the game did the job. SFS returned the interception for the first touchdown of the game, also making the extra point. Approximately four minutes in, SFS was up 7 to 0.

The championship game between SFS, the defending champions, and SERE, didn't disappoint. It ended the two-month flag football season with SFS holding tight to their title for the second year running, defeating SERE 35 to 21. Col. Brian McDaniel, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, worked the down marker, moving along the sideline with the teams and awarding SFS the championship trophy at the end of the night.

Last year, the flag football season ended after one month of the weekly football games, extending the season to two months this year ensured all the teams were able to participate in at least four games. It allowed more teams to compete against each other and prepare longer for the playoffs.

The flag football program, ran by Senior Airman Janmichael Obiniana, 92nd Force Support Squadron intramural sports director, consisted of 110 participants, making up 11 different teams including a team from the Military Entrance Processing Station. It allows Airmen of all ranks to participate in a fun and competitive way, while also contributing to overall readiness.

"Intramural sports contribute to mission readiness and enhance fitness, physically and mentally," said Obiniana. "Play hard, play smart and play together."

The 92nd Air Maintenance Squadron competed against the 92nd Operations Group for third place Sept. 30, 2015. AMXS took the third place title in a final score of 14 to 7.
