The 16th annual Scholarships for Military Children Program, hosted by the Defense Commissary Agency, will begin accepting applications from eligible students Dec. 15.

The program was created in recognition of the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community. It is funded through the generosity of manufacturers and suppliers whose products are sold at military commissaries worldwide.

Applicants must be an unmarried child younger than the age of 21, or 23 if enrolled as a full-time student at a college or university, of a service member on active duty, a Reserve or Guard member, retiree or survivor of a military member who died while on active duty.

Eligible dependents will hand-deliver or ship applications via United States Postal Service to their local commissary by Friday, Feb. 12. Applications cannot be emailed or faxed.

A total of 700 scholarship grants, each worth $2,000, will be awarded for the 2016-2017 school year. Students selected for the honor will join nearly 9,000 who've been awarded more than $13.9 million in scholarship grants over the last 15 years.

Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps service members and their families, administers the program. Scholarship Managers, a national, nonprofit scholarship management services organization, coordinates and awards the scholarships.

Eric Quantock, Fairchild Commissary store director and team leader, explained any help with reducing the high amount of college expenses is very beneficital to a military family. Often, families are having to pay for room and board, as well as tuition. The scholarship can go a long way in helping reduce the overall costs, he added.

"This is a great opportunity to potentially be awarded a $2,000 scholarship to reduce the overall costs of a student's college expenses," Quantock said. "The odds of winning are good, too. Considering every year since the inception of this program, between two and four students have been awarded scholarships that have applied at the Fairchild commissary."
