Giving back, volunteer programs for military spouses Published July 22, 2013 By Senior Airman Samantha Krolikowski 92 Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Are you new to Fairchild? Looking for something to do to help keep you busy? There are several places where military spouses can volunteer, including: Airman & Family Readiness Center, Airman's Attic, The Family Child Care program and Fairchild's Sheriff Community Oriented Policing Effort program. The A&FRC is always seeking volunteers to assist with staffing the Emergency Family Assistance Control Center. "If it wasn't for a lot of the volunteers that come in, there are things on a day to day basis that we wouldn't have time to get done," said Angela Theunissen, Family Services Coordinator at the Airman and Family Readiness Center. "They do a lot of things for us like sorting through the donations and helping all of the customers in the Attic." Not only can spouses volunteer on base, they also have a chance to volunteer off base through other organizations. The American Red Cross has opportunities on and off base for volunteers and volunteers can also help at the base pharmacy. The A&FRC has volunteer opportunities for receptionists, program assistants and other office help. Spokane Veteran's Home is also always in need of volunteers. "The Inland Northwest Blood Center is always seeking volunteers in their canteens in their fixed sites or on their mobile drives," said Angela M. O'Connell, Community Readiness Consultant. "These volunteers assist with serving juice, cookies, etc. to individuals upon completion of donating." Not only can volunteering keep you busy, but it can also give spouses a sense of gratitude. "On a personal side, I think the best thing about being a volunteer with the military, is being able to give back to the military," said Mrs. Theunissen. "They do so much for our families and it's one of the best ways to give back for all the service they do for us."
