Name: Staff Sgt. Matthew Nichols

Unit: 92nd Logistics Readiness Squadron

Duty title: NCO in charge Fixed Facilities

What do you do on a daily basis at Fairchild Air Force Base?
You will find me in the gym before you wake up getting my fitness on. Once the weights need a break, I head to work where I supervise and inspect six different fuel facilities for proper operation so that Fairchild's high quality fuel needs are met. In addition to that I ensure I hug the trees by spreading copious amounts of environmental facts around and doing our part to save the environment.

Why do you enjoy your job?
I enjoy being able to work outside and having the many responsibilities that come with the job. I love the daily challenges and new experiences it brings so I can become a stronger person and NCO.

Why did you choose to serve in the military?
At the time, I was not ready for college but still wanted to start my life. After watching what happened on 9-11, I have always wanted to do my part in protecting this great country. I am the fifth generation in my family to join the military and that also makes me proud to continue what my family has done for so long.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Being sober for 20 months and counting.

What goals do you want to achieve or meet while at Fairchild Air Force Base?
Get my degree and make Master Sgt.

What is your best habit?
My excellent work ethic.

What is your favorite quote?
"Keep silent unless what you are going to say is more important than silence." - Salvator Rosa.

Who is your favorite mentor and what did you learn from him/her?
I would have to say my dad is my favorite mentor. He has taught me how important it is to have a good work ethic and with hard work comes great reward. I would not be the man I am today without that.

If you could spend one hour with any person, who would it be and why?
I would want to spend it with the president. I would want to experience just a portion of the magnitude of responsibility he has. I know for a fact that it would humble me when I think I have too much on my plate. Plus, I think it would be cool to just meet the president.
