Fairchild service members separating from active duty now have the opportunity to attend a specialized two-day workshop designed to help them achieve their post-military goals by learning about the benefits of higher education. The workshop, entitled "Accessing Higher Education", is designed to help individuals prepare for transition into civilian life as a full-time college student.

This unique program covers essential items such as understanding the realities of campus life, obtaining credit for military training and experience, researching schools and completing a college admissions application. The class will also provide an understanding of financial assistance, to include the risks associated with incurring debt while achieving educational goals.

The workshop is a key component of the newly designed Transition Assistance Program, known as Transition - Goals, Plans, Success, or Transition-GPS, offered by the Airman and Family Readiness Center. The core curriculum of the five day program includes counseling, budget planning, veteran's benefits and military skill-set translation to civilian terminology. During their time in the program, service members can opt to attend the workshop. Based on current scheduling, those interested in attending the workshop have an opportunity at the end of each month (normally the last Monday and Tuesday).

One of the primary benefits associated with military service is financial assistance (the GI Bill), which can be used to defray most or all of the costs associated with higher education. In order to get the most out of this benefit, service members should have a concise plan. This is important because earning a higher education degree, license or certificate has lifelong implications for those seeking a quality filled, productive life.

Furthermore, a well thought-out plan will preclude lost effort, time, energy, and unnecessary dollars spent on programs that do not provide a satisfying career path or outcome. The workshop will ensure service members gain the most from their educational benefits by creating a customized plan ensuring the best opportunity for a successful transition to an academic institution of higher learning.

The workshop is offered exclusively by the Fairchild Air Force Base Education and Training Center and the next session will occur on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For additional information or to register, or subsequent workshops, please contact Mr. Barry Miller at 509-247-4209 or via email at Barry.Miller.11@us.af.mil.
