Name: Tech. Sgt. Steven Mayo

Unit of assignment: 912th Air Refueling Squadron

Nominee's duty title: Aircrew Flight Equipment NCOIC

Where did you grow up? Fremont, California

What do you do on a daily basis at Fairchild Air Force Base? I'm the NCOIC of the 912 ARS Aircrew Flight Equipment shop, supervise 6 other AFE technicians, and am currently working in the Quality Assurance section. I keep track of OJT records as well as making sure life sustaining equipment is inspected properly in accordance with correct Technical Orders and prevent safety of flight issues. I am part of a Total Force Integration unit and I also work in the same shop with 35 reservists.

What do you enjoy about your job? The interaction I have with my fellow workers and being able to become a strong mentor. I also enjoy establishing a relationship with our customers who are the aircrew members.

Why did you choose to serve in the military? It was a childhood dream of mine which started with having a passion for planes and wanting to become a pilot. My favorite plane is the F-16 Fighting Falcon till this very day. So once I discovered all the other benefits and opportunities of joining the Air Force, I knew it was a perfect match for me. I have never regretted joining.

Family: Wife and 2 kids

How long have you been in the military? 13.5 years

What is your greatest accomplishment? Being able to serve and fulfilling a lifelong dream which was joining the Air force.

What goals do you want to achieve or meet while at the Fairchild AFB? Making Master Sgt. and reaching 20 years in the Air Force.

What are your hobbies? Being with my family, traveling, sports, and living life to the fullest.

What is your best habit? Doing the best with my given abilities.

Favorite Quote: "Just know, when you truly want success, you'll never give up on it. No matter how bad the situation may get." Unknown.

What is your favorite movie? I have too many. But I do enjoy comedies and actions.

Who is your favorite mentor and what did you learn from her? My favorite mentor is my grandmother. Had it not been for her constantly motivating me to join the Air Force even when I felt I wasn't good enough, I never would have made it here. She never quit on me. So what I've learned from her is all things are possible for those who believe in themselves.

If you could spend one hour with any person, who would it be and why? If I had to choose one hour to spend with anyone it would be a certain fellow Airman who I recently deployed with. He was the maintenance pro superintendent who deployed with us this past February and unfortunately committed suicide one week before our return to March Air Reserve Base in April. I was the acting first sergeant and also the first to discover him. The reason I would choose an hour with him is because I want to know why he decided to end his life that way. What could have been done to prevent it? I know we can't change the past, but we can absolutely change the future. We can change the future by showing more awareness and care towards our Airmen. I am a firm believer in the wingman concept.
