Fairchild promotes safety during Halloween Published Oct. 18, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Janelle Patiño 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Scary costumes, candy, kids having fun and busy streets -- that's what Halloween is all about. With Halloween just around the corner, it is important to have a plan before going trick-or-treating. Having a plan is paramount if your child gets separated from his or her friends or from you, advises base security forces officials. Parents are encouraged to review the route their children take for trick-or-treating beforehand and set a time when kids should be home. "Children are looking forward to trick-or-treating," said Tech. Sgt. Moriah Washburn, 92nd Security Forces Squadron installation physical security. "The 92nd SFS would like to ensure that trick-or-treaters, you, and your house, stay safe for this holiday by following a few tips." Using safety tips is a big part in making the Halloween season as enjoyable as possible. The following are some tips to keep kids safe during this holiday season. -Clear yards and sidewalks of any obstacles or decorations that may be hard to see in the dark. -Check to ensure that costumes are flame-retardant so that young ones are safe around jackolanterns, candles and other flames. -Keep costumes short to ensure that children do not trip while out and about. -Look for brightly colored costumes, attach reflector strips to costumes and bags or remind trick-or-treaters to carry glow sticks or flashlights. -Older kids should trick-or-treat in groups, especially at night. Younger kids should be accompanied by a parent or trusted neighbor. - Remind children not to eat treats until they've come home. -Check all treats at home in a well-lighted place. Be especially wary of anything that is not wrapped by the factory or that is no longer sealed. -Report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Law Enforcement desk at 509-247-5493 or for emergencies, dial 911 or your local law enforcement. During the hours set for trick-or-treating, pumpkin patrol volunteers will walk through out housing areas on base for any suspicious or criminal activities. "Pumpkin patrol is a show of force in the Balfour Beatty Communities to provide a safe environment for the children while they are trick-or treating." Washburn said. "Volunteers will be in uniform with reflective belts or vests on with a flashlight." For more information about pumpkin patrol or Halloween Safety, call Tech. Sgt. Washburn at 509-247-8923.
