How Airmen can prepare for holiday spending

With holiday shopping right around the corner, Airmen are encouraged to stay vigilant when searching for money saving gift ideas this year. Here are a few strategies to keep in mind when planning for holiday spending.

First, make a budget. Write down all planned purchases and costs, including gifts, food and travel. This budgeting helps buyers prevent overspending.

"The worst thing to do is wait till the last minute to have a budgeting plan for the holidays," said Brian Bennett, FAFB community readiness specialist. "Airmen should have a system where they purchase items throughout the year to save money during the holidays, also helping to avoid using credit cards for impulse buys closer to the holidays. Also look for times of the year when businesses have huge discounted products. If traveling, make plans before the season to save money."

Some of the best deals on products arrive with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Many stores have sales for items listed up to half off original price. The downside to Black Friday is the heavy amount of crowded stores filled front to back with customers and that many people stand in line for hours the night before, just to receive those great deals. Another opportunity for great sale prices is Cyber Monday, the first Monday after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is a day when prices almost equivalent to Black Friday sales are posted for online shopping only, and is considered the largest online shopping day of the season.

Avoiding crowds and higher prices can be as simple as gifts crafted at home. The Arts and Craft Center on base also has many do-it-yourself ideas that can make great gifts for the holidays.

Another great way to save money is by not spending it at all. Instead, giving time by volunteering in the community is a great gift for many during this time of year.

"The A&FRC provides resources to Airmen to learn how to manage money, understand debt and get spending under control," said Bennett. "These programs show how long it will take to pay off credit cards, car payments and other financial obligations. We even offer workshops throughout the year."
