Eating healthy during holidays

The phrase "Fit to fight!" probably doesn't bring images of Thanksgiving dinner followed by sitting in front of a football game on television. For Airmen who don't think of sugar, carbohydrates and fat when they see falling snow and hear holiday music, common sense can go a long way in offsetting the worst dietary temptations.

"Limit starchy and sugary foods, such as breads and desserts made with sugar," said Alyson Kresser, Fairchild Health and Wellness Center dietitian. "Healthy dessert options can include a low-sugar, fruit-based option, such as fresh fruit over frozen yogurt or a berry crisp with an oat- and nut-based crumb topping."

Airmen should remember to keep their cravings in check.

"Portions are important, too," Kresser said. "Have a little of everything so you don't feel deprived. Fist-sized portions of most foods are plenty."

Airmen also need to remain aware of their normal limits when indulging.

"Monitor alcohol intake, especially with eggnog or mixed drinks high in sugar," Kresser said. "Eat before you go to a party. We make terrible decisions about food when we are hungry, so eating something to take the edge off can keep you from overeating."
