Significant changes to Pro-Gear shipment allowances

The Defense Travel Management Office has approved changes to the Joint Federal Travel Regulations Volume 1 and Joint Travel Regulations Volume 2 that significantly change the shipment of professional books, papers and equipment, often referred to as Pro Gear.

The following Pro Gear changes apply to household goods shipments for permanent change-of-station orders issued on or after May 1:

·Maximum weight allowed is 2,000 pounds.
·Cubed weight is now seven pounds per cubic foot.
·Items must be required to perform duties at next duty station.
·Personal computer equipment and peripheral devices are no longer considered Pro Gear.
·Going away gifts, office decorations, pictures, etc., including awards, plaques and other objects presented for past performance are not considered Pro Gear.

Pro Gear now only includes:

·Reference material not ordinarily available at the next duty station.
·Instruments, tools and equipment peculiar to musicians, technicians, mechanics and medical professionals.
·Specialized clothing (i.e. diving suits, astronaut suits, flying suits and helmets, band uniforms, chaplain vestments, and other specialized apparel that is not normal or usual uniform wear or clothing.
·Communication equipment used by a Defense Department civilian employees or DoD members in association with the Military Affiliate Radio System (DODI 4650.02).
·Individually owned or specially issued field clothing and equipment.
·Government or uniformed service owned accountable organizational clothing and individual clothing property issued to the employee or member by the Service or DoD component for official use.

The following items still remain excluded:

·Commercial products for sale/resale used in conducting business.
·Sports equipment.
·Office furniture.
·Household furniture.
·Shop fixtures.
·Table service (i.e. dishes, utensils, or glassware).
