Leadership Pathways offers classes for self-improvement

Individuals seeking resilience and self-improvement learning opportunities can now find classes through an all-new Leadership Pathways program.

This program offers class information and signup in one location. Leadership Pathways is aimed at encouraging the Total Force, Department of Defense civilians and family members to participate in wing programs and activities to strengthen individual, family and unit resilience. The program's intent is to promote resilience, foster connections, encourage help seeking, optimize available resources and provide effective tools to Fairchild employees and their families.

"Awareness and education about things that take our mind off the mission is always a good thing," said Dawn Altmaier, the Fairchild community support coordinator. "We all need tools and skills to succeed. These classes are one way for us to acquire those skills and tools."

Leadership Pathways uses the four pillars of the Comprehensive Airman Fitness model including mental, physical, social and spiritual domains.

"We need a good foundation and the right tools and skills to improve our mental, physical, social, and spiritual health," said Altmaier.

The new learning structure strives to have people attend training before something like substance abuse, physical or emotional attacks by a family member or excessive eating happens.

"Our hope is people will attend these classes when things are going well so they are better prepared to handle themselves, or others, when life happens," said Altmaier. "It's also about acquiring tools to help their friends, family members, peers, subordinates, and anyone else who may need a shoulder to lean on."

After completing a program, recipients receive recognition for participation by earning credit points for a range of classes they attend. Classes can help participants on their journey through being a Wingman, leader and warrior, Altmaier said, by utilizing a similarly named three-tiered recognition system. Attending enough classes to earn 10 points will accomplish the "Wingman" tier and earn recognition from the group commander. Earning 20 points is required for the "Leader" tier and will earn recognition from the 92 Air Refueling Wing commander. Accumulating 30 points accomplishes the "Warrior" tier and earns recognition from the Air Mobility Command on the "Virtual Warrior Wall."

"Folks who take these classes help themselves and others because they can handle stressors better, bounce back on their feet faster and tend to not get into as much trouble due to the choices they make," said Altmaier. "It is very important because people are our most important resource. If we don't take care of our people, they have more difficulty taking care of the mission."
