Briefly Published May 23, 2007 FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- The following are brief notifications or updates about events happening on or around the base: Wingman Day Fairchild's Wingman Day is May 24. Safety briefings at the theatre will be held at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Briefings are one hour. Memorial Day ceremony The Washington Air National Guard honor guard and the Horton-Strength VFW Post 3386 will be performing a memorial service 9 a.m., May 28 at the Fort George Wright Cemetery. The cemetery is located at Government Way and Houston Street in Spokane. Golf tournament The 5th Annual Society of American Military Engineers Golf Tournament takes place June 1 at the Wandermere Golf Course. Shotgun start for the best ball scramble is at 7 a.m. Entry fee is $65 per player or $240 for a foursome. Price includes a round of golf, a cart and an all-you-can-eat hamburger and salad lunch. The tournament is open to SAME members and nonmembers; proceeds benefit the SAME Lewis and Clark Post Scholarship Fund. Tournament sponsorship opportunities are available for $100, $200 and $325. Indoor pool closure The indoor pool will be temporarily closed through June 14 to complete a mission-critical construction project. This will effect all pool operations including spring swim lessons, swim team, open swim, lap swim, water aerobics and pool parties. All patrons with pool passes can request to have extended by one month free of charge. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to serving you again soon. Fairchild's Great Race: Sign up now Sign up now for this 12-hour challenge starting at midnight, May 31, and running till the clock strikes noon, June 1. Contestants will participate in land, sea and air challenges at Fairchild and throughout Spokane. Events will require a high level of both physical prowess and mental aptitude. Fairchild's Great Race is open to all employees of Fairchild and their dependants, age 16 and older. Registration is $20 per team of two. Dependents must enter the race with a parent. Michael Anderson Elementary recycling contest Michael Anderson Elementary and the recycling center will be hosting a recycling contest for students June 2. Each class will compete in separate divisions to obtain the most material by weight. Kindergarten through 3rd grade will compete from 8 to 11 a.m., and 4th through 6th grade will compete from noon to 3 p.m. Glass, motor oil, antifreeze and car batteries will not be accepted. Call 247-2885 for more information. A&FRC to offer free movie matinee A free children's movie matinee will play July 14 at 2 p.m. at the base theater. This event, which is sponsored by the Airman and Family Readiness Center, is open to the first 400 military children and their parents to arrive. Free popcorn, a drink and candy will also be on hand. Air conditioner brackets Fairchild's new air conditioner brackets are the required standard installation method for window air conditioners in family housing. The brackets are available for family housing occupants (limit of two brackets per household) at the Family Housing Office, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Installation instructions and parts are included in the package. Housing Inspectors will be available to answer questions. Air conditioner brackets will be included in this year's summer inspections. T-ball and coach pitch program T-ball and coach pitch registration is currently taking place through June 15. T-ball is for ages 5 and 6, and coach pitch is for ages 7 and 8. The cost is $35. A current physical is required. The league is non-competitive and teaches basic fundamentals, good sportsmanship, self-esteem, self-reliance, group achievement perspective and team sports appreciation in a fun and safe environment. Smart Start T-ball is a parent and child program for ages 3 and 4. The cost is $45. Children learn the basic fundamentals of T-ball in a zero-pressure environment. Registration for both programs is at the Youth Center Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The first game is July 10. Teams are formed on the availability of coaches. Waiting lists are formed on a first-come basis. Volunteer coaches, assistant coaches and officials are needed. A coaches clinic will be offered at 5 p.m., June 23 at the Deel Community Center. Paintball range now open Paintball is back with a splat at the Sports Range, where the paintball season is now officially open. The speedball course is designed for all players/skill levels.
