Archery deer hunting season coming up at Fairchild

After a skipped year in 2006, on-base archery hunting will be re-instituted at Fairchild. The season is Sept. 16-30.

The base has a relatively high number of deer, to include both mule and whitetail deer, and the deer population needs to be reduced for both mission and habitat purposes. Flightline and driver safety are a concern when deer numbers increase.

Archery hunters can enter a lottery for a base permit, which will cost $10 for those persons whose name is drawn. There will be a maximum of 10 permits issued this year.

Potential hunters must possess all required Washington licenses and tags in addition to the base-issued permit. All hunters must attend a briefing on the rules and demonstrate their proficiency in using legal archery equipment. Although the briefing and proficiency date has yet to be determined, all successful permit holders will be notified.

Hunters will be allowed to hunt every day, but may be assigned to a specific zone. A check station will be set up at the Thorpe/Rambo road intersection where hunters will check in on a daily basis. For more information contact Jonathan Wald at 247-8207.
