Upcoming Events: Aug. 15: Commander's Challenge The annual Commander's Challenge on Aug. 15 will include a 5K run, volleyball, dodge ball, an obstacle course relay, tug of war and a trophy presentation that goes to the top team. Aug. 15: Fairchild Icon Finals On Aug. 15 selected finalists will compete for best entertainer during Fairchild Icon at Club Fairchild at 5 p.m. The first, second and third place finalist will win $500, $300 and $200 prizes, respectively. The winner of the event will compete for the title of Air Mobility Command Icon at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., an all expenses paid trip and the opportunity to win $1,000 cash. Sept. 4: Retiree Appreciation Day Armed forces retirees are invited to attend a day of informational services tailored to educate retirees on their benefits at 9 a.m. Sept. 4. The 92nd Medical Group medical programs available to retirees; the 92nd Services will discuss upcoming events and programs that they offer; Base Exchange and Commissary representatives will inform guests of upcoming events; military personnel flight members will describe Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and identification card issues; the director for Retiree Activities Office from the tri-cities area will attend; and various representatives from the Spokane Veterans Association will also join to talk about veterans issues, as well as many other guest speakers. Arrive by 8:30 a.m. to register. Aug. 22: First Sergeant's dorm barbeque The Fairchild's First Sergeant Association is hosting a barbeque for dorm residents at 2 p.m. Aug. 22. The barbeque will take place in the dorm common area where there will be a four-on-four volleyball tournament; a $100 cash award will be given to the winning team. Sept. 11: America Supports You Freedom Walk On Sept. 11 join the walk for freedom in America's second annual Freedom Walk event starting at Waterfront Park in Medical Lake, Wash. Last year over 135 Freedom were held across the U.S. to honor the victims of 9/11, reflect on the freedoms we have in America and pay tribute to our veterans, past and present. The flight chief is responsible for all aspects of operations; implementing policies, programs and procedures; and providing leadership, guidance and direction to the faculty support staff and students. The flight chief also supervises and/or evaluates a faculty of five and is responsible for training the faculty. He or she interfaces with Air Force and civic organizations to enhance support for enlisted professional military education, recruits and selects faculty; manages all resource programs: manpower, money, equipment and facilities; and plans, manages, and hosts graduation ceremonies. Practices are held at the indoor pool; all levels of experience are welcome and swim all year round. There is the Aqua Aviators Novice Swim Team novice swim team which meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4 - 5 p.m. Participants are 18 years and under. Cost per month is $25. The Masters Swim Team meets Monday and Wednesday from 5 - 6:30 p.m. Participants are over the age of 18, and is free of charge. Monthly swim meets are held if you are interested in participating. The class is open to all military and civilian personnel; however, some courses are limited to certain ranks/grades. Courses offered: Listening Skills - Involves the essentials of listening skills, saving time and resources, and avoiding challenges by using better communication skills. Study Skills - This seminar is designed for military, civilians or dependents returning to college after a long absence. The primary focus of study skills is to introduce individuals to time management awareness to help balance the demands of school and working life. Other modules include memory, reading for comprehension and test taking tips. In this course the student will assess their learning style, make a study calendar and establish goals. The class is scheduled for Sept. 10. They will be held at the Base Education Center in Room 105 from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with lunch from noon - 1 p.m. Southern Illinois University Carbondale Southern Illinois University Carbondale has an accelerated format degree in which the major can be completed in as little as one year. The degree is accomplished on an alternating weekend schedule that takes up about one to two weekends per month. Classes begin Aug. 23. Some of the benefits of this program include: No associates degree required to begin the program. Up to 44 semester hours granted for individual work experience and technical training (equivalent to about 15 college courses). Only 14 SIUC General Education courses required - you may already have some of these completed. Civilians are welcome to attend, as well - full financial assistance is available to qualified students.
