A six year old girl's immediate reaction to her mother's collapse and subsequent unresponsiveness alerted emergency responders via the 911 telephone system, ultimately saving her mother's life.

Our story begins on a chilly, Wednesday morning, not unlike many other early March days here at Fairchild. Jocelyn, currently a first grader at Michael Anderson Elementary School, and her mother Jessica were sitting down for breakfast. Jessica's husband, Nick, an active duty Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape instructor, was teaching a group of students in the field. After Jessica finished her breakfast, she took some medicine prescribed to her for a recent knee surgery. Jocelyn was taking her breakfast dishes to the kitchen when her mother suddenly appeared to be unstable on her crutches. Jessica remembers telling her daughter she was not feeling well, as she began feeling dizzy with blurred vision.

Jocelyn watched as her mother started to sway and her crutches fell away from her. She watched helplessly as Jessica collapsed on the kitchen floor. Jocelyn quickly dropped to the floor next her mother calling out to her in a frightened voice. Tears started to swell in her eyes as she kneeled next to her mom on the cold kitchen floor, staring at her incapacitated mother. Bravely and decisively, Jocelyn ran to her neighbors' house, across the street, and asked for help.

Jocelyn led her neighbor to her unconscious mother and both attempted to wake her. The neighbor remained with Jessica while Jocelyn ran to notify the neighbor's husband across the street, who quickly contacted 911 via his cell phone. Emergency medical personnel arrived on scene, and Jessica was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. Jessica has since fully recovered and is doing just fine -- all thanks to the decisive actions of little Jocelyn.

The moral of this story is to make sure to talk to your kids and help them understand what to do in an emergency situation.
