Volunteer opportunities Published April 8, 2009 FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Volunteer opportunities: Second Harvest FAFB Warehouse Sort Day On Saturday, April 11, Second Harvest will be hosting a special Fairchild Air Force Base Warehouse Sort Day. Come join your fellow airmen in sorting and boxing food drive and salvage items in preparation for delivery to our 20 emergency food outlets. Thirty Airmen are needed for the 9 a.m. to noon shift and an additional 30 Airmen are needed for the noon to 3 p.m. shift. Airmen are welcome to bring family members 14 and over. Stamp Out Hunger Volunteer for the Letter Carriers Food Drive May 9. Second Harvest needs more than 100 volunteers to help load donated bags of groceries into trucks at 10 postal stations in the Spokane area. Also needed are driver and runner teams to pick up donated bags of groceries from neighborhood porches and return them to the designated postal collection site. Twenty-ninth National Veterans Wheelchair Games Volunteers are needed for the 29th National Veterans Wheelchair Games. The games will be help in Spokane July 13 to 18 and an estimated 3,000 volunteers are needed. Events will be held at various locations including: Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena, Spokane Convention Center, Lilac Valley and North Bowl facilities, Whitworth University pool, Spokane Valley Gun Club, Spokane Falls Community College and Riverfront Park. Many times are available to volunteer. Volunteers must be registered by April 1. Michael Anderson Elementary School Volunteers are needed to come to the school during lunchtime on a regular basis for a 20- to 30- minute block of time. Each volunteer would take four to five students with them to have lunch at a table in the art room. Each group of students would interact with the volunteer, playing board games, which we would provide. The object is to get students to interact in a positive way in a social setting with other students and with adults. The school counselor would also be in the room with her own group of students. Taking turns, listening to others, being a good sport and working together is the goal. Big Brothers, Big Sisters Michael Anderson Elementary School is looking for Big Brothers, Big Sisters, men and women who are free to spend one hour per week during lunch with a child at the school. They would have lunch together and be with them at recess. Consistency is critical for children, as they become very attached to their big brother or sister. The school understands that there are times when a volunteer may be gone out of town or other setbacks and will work around this. Applications are available at the school.
