The West Plains Chamber of Commerce hosted their Annual Best of the West Plains Awards gala Thursday evening at the Fairways Country Club in Cheney. Chamber Executive Director and Airway Heights Mayor Matt Pederson handled the Master of Ceremony's responsibilities.

Among the many selectees singled out for special recognition was Fairchild Air Force Base, home of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing. Fairchild was named by the West Plains Chamber as the recipient of the Tourism Event of the Year Award for 2008.

Commenting on Fairchild's selection, Pederson said, "The work Team Fairchild put into producing the Inland Northwest SKYFEST Open House was nothing short of outstanding." Pederson went on to say, "SKYFEST 2008, with an attendance estimated at more than 215,000, was the largest single tourism event of its kind in our region since Spokane hosted the World's Fair in 1974."

Mayor Pederson presented the award to Colonel Robert Thomas, Commander of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing.

Commenting on the award Thomas said, "SKYFEST 2008 was an opportunity that permitted us to invite all of our friends and neighbors to Fairchild to enable them to come on board and check out their Air Base." Thomas added, "We want to be recognized as a good neighbor and a strong supporter of the West Plains Region where many of our service men and women live, work and raise their families."
