During the Fairchild 101 Critical Days of Summer kickoff May 20, Col. Paul Guemmer, 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, announced the base would celebrate a family day if their safety goals were met for the season.

"This means no Class A or B mishaps and no more than five Class C mishaps," said the commander at the day's all-call at Miller Park. "We need to start setting the tone for summer. This is the most dangerous time statistically for the Air Force when injuries occur off duty."

According to the 92nd ARW Safety office, a Class A mishap is an incident resulting in a person's death or a permanent disability. Class B incidents are a person who suffers a partial, permanent disability. Class C incidents are injuries that result in lost duty days.

Tech. Sgt. Shane Marshall, NCO in charge of ground safety, said although Fairchild did not have a Class A incident during last year's 101 Critical Days of Summer, they did have one Class B incident involving an ATV accident and seven Class C incidents involving mostly sports and recreational-related injuries.

The 92nd ARW Command Chief Master Sergeant said he had confidence Fairchild could meet the goal.

"Being a wingman isn't a singular event. It happens 365 [days]. If we put operational risk management in the forefront, we will do well," said Chief Master Sgt. Rudy Lopez.

The chief also stressed the importance of using Fairchild's version of the Airman Against Drunk Driving program. Three local cab companies have agreed to transport Airmen home on good faith the fare will be paid within two paychecks. Airmen can get a card that lists these companies and their phone numbers from their first sergeant. The back of the card has a place for the Airman's name, unit, phone number and the amount owed to the cab company.

"We all know plans fall through sometimes. Please utilize this program and stay safe," Chief Lopez said.
