Team Fairchild celebrated Police Week May 15-20 with several events, displays and demonstrations by members of the 92nd Security Forces Squadron.

Police Week has been around since 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating May 15 of each year as Peace Officer's Memorial Day in honor of federal, state, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty.

"Police Week is really something special because it honors those who have served as an officer before us and shows those who are currently serving as officers that we are appreciated for the work we do whether it's federal or state," said Senior Master Sgt. Jason Parker, 92nd ARW, SFS, Operation Superintendent.

As a part of Police Week, security forces Airmen visited Michael Elementary School along with costumed characters Eddie the Eagle, Scrappy and McGruff the Crime Dog to teach students about safety. Sheriffs from the Spokane Police Department also attended the event.

Kids were able to observe police and military vehicles in and out, play with sirens, wear SF helmets and ask law enforcement professionals questions.

"If felt great to be around kids again," said Senior Airman Alexander Aun, security forces patrolman. "I believe this set a good example for them. It's good we performed this event at the school here because most schools don't get the chance to receive a fun but learning event like this. They knew a lot about the vehicles that we showed them, and that was very impressive."

After losing a basketball game last year and being defeated in another sports challenge in 2009, the Security Forces Squadron finally overcame the fire department in the "Battle of the Badges" volleyball game by coming back in the final game to win after being down 19-9.

"It was a very intense game," said Staff Sgt. Timothy Adkins, SFS, who is the base defense operations center controller. "It's always great to get together with the guys from the fire department to have a little competitive fun, but even better to beat them especially after being down the way we were."

Security Forces Airmen ensure the base is secure.

"It's great the security forces squadron is recognized yearly for all that they do for the base," said Airman 1st Class Marlon McLeod an Airman from the 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron. "They face a lot of challenges with all the different things that can go wrong on base. I respect them for the hard work they put into making sure we are secured."
