Fairchild Air Force Base is searching for the next Fairchild Icon. The Icon program is loosely based around the hit TV program, American Idol.

Team Fairchild will conduct its base level talent show, karaoke style, Friday, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. in Miller Park following the base picnic. Interested ID card holders who are 18 years and older must sign up by appointment only at the Community Center (now located in the Funspot) from July 9 to 31 to participate. Base-level cash prizes are $500, $300 and $200.

The top finishing Air Force vocalist will then compete for cash prizes of $1,000, $600 and $400 during the Icon finals to be held at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., on Oct. 25, 2012.

"This is a great way for our talented singers at Fairchild to showcase their skills," said Kristen Malkin, 92nd Force Support Squadron marketing administrative assistant. "Other than being serenaded by our contestants, members are encouraged to come out for the base picnic. It will be a great way to intermingle with your fellow servicemembers while enjoying good music and great times."

The AMC Icon program also features a special category for those Air Force members not stationed on or near an AMC host base such as Fairchild. AMC affiliate participants can enter by forwarding a music video showcasing their talents. Cash awards are available in this category as well, and the winner will also compete in the command finals.

"AMC is loaded with many extremely talented Airmen, Icon is one of the very best ways for those folks to showcase the best vocal talents within the command," stated Scott Black, chief AMC marketing and Icon program manager. "Now in our fifth year of AMC Icon, we've been blessed with an abundance of exceptional vocalists and have actually had several of our finalists go on to perform with Air Force Tops in Blue."

Finalists are accompanied by the Air Force Band of Mid-America stationed at Scott AFB and arrangements are in the works to again broadcast the show live over the internet.

Interested participants are encouraged to contact the base's marketing office for additional information by calling 247-5302 or by email 92fss.fsfp@us.af.mil.
