A Spokane, Wash., local received a tour of the base and special recognition for her efforts of delivering care packages to U.S. servicemembers deployed to the U.S. military's Central Command Sept. 11.

Jessica Davidson, 18-year-old Spokane resident and 2012 Lewis and Clark High School graduate, focused her senior project on raising money and sending boxes to deployed servicemembers at the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan.

As fate would have it, Fairchild's newest 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, Col. Brian Newberry, was deployed there as the 376th Expeditionary Operations Group commander and received a package.

"It meant so much to me, all the care packages that she sent overseas," Newberry said. "They just kind of remind you of home and that's what it's all about. We're over there because we're protecting home, protecting Spokane and all that this country represents."

Newberry and Davidson became quick pen pals but never met face-to-face until this tour.

"I have the utmost respect for our military," Davidson said. "I didn't expect any of this to happen. It's just an amazing opportunity to see that what I did mattered. It seems like such a small thing, sending care packages, compared to what they do for us."
