Team helps Airmen prepare for zombie apocalypse

To survive a zombie attack, people don't need to run faster than the zombie, they just need to be faster than the person next to them.

The Fairchild Airman's Running Team hopes to train people to do just that.

This "zombie-themed" run starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Meet time is 5:45 p.m. at the Funspot to discuss ground rules and route. The event will also be an opportunity for experts at the 92nd Medical Group to practice their skills with moulage makeup starting at 4 p.m.

Moulage is a mixture of make-up and prosthetics to bring mock injuries to life for the purpose of training such as self-aid and buddy care.

During this event each runner will wear a flag belt representing their health. Runners who finish with flags remaining are survivors of the zombie apocalypse.

Everyone is encouraged to dress warmly because of the cold weather. It will also be dark, so bring a flashlight and wear something reflective. No headphones or dogs are allowed during the run.

"The zombie run is sure to be a great time," said Staff Sgt. Sean Devereaux, vice president of the FAR team. "And during the run, the last thing on your mind is how far you're going ... you're just trying to make it out alive!"

There are approximately 30-40 members of the running team here on Fairchild. The team consists of active duty military members, civilians, dependents and sometimes even dogs and children.

"It's nice to provide a leadership body for the team," said Lt. Col. Bradley Weast, president of the FAR team. "We all like to run and be fit. It's extremely motivational to run with such a supportive group of people."

The running team was established about three years ago by the former 92nd Operations Group commander.

The team typically meets Tuesdays around 4:50 p.m. at the Funspot for a three-to-four mile run.

Anyone looking to become a member of the FAR team should contact Staff Sgt. Sean Devereaux at 247-5882.
