The 717 smokers on Fairchild will have the opportunity to join the rest of the country on Nov. 15 for the Great American Smokeout.

"This nationally recognized day, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, is a time for smokers to quit for just 24 hours," said William Saultes, Health Promotion Program Coordinator. "It also helps inform individuals of the help that is available to support people along the way."

Smokers are encouraged to quit for one day to prove they can quit for good - and they are not alone.

There are many options to meet everyone's individual needs to help them quit smoking, including phone helplines and websites featuring tools to help increase the chances of quitting successfully, said Saultes.

Smokers can also contact the Health and Wellness Center to ask about the Tobacco Cessation Class beginning on the first Tuesday of each month. This four week tobacco free program is an interactive, instructor led program taught by multi-disciplinary professionals.

"The biggest goal of this class is to give people a plan of action when they are in a stressful situation and want to revert back to tobacco products for help," Saultes said. "Our team is here to help give the required support and skills to quit for good."

Anyone interested in joining in on the Great American Smokeout can contact the Health and Wellness Center at 247-5590 or log on to www.ucanquit2.org for more information.
