The 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, Col. Brian Newberry, handed out the first Blue Star Spouse Award Jan. 4.

The award is a local honor established to recognize spouses and family members who go the extra mile for Fairchild families.

"After signing letters of appreciation for many spouses in conjunction with retirement ceremonies, I realized we should do more to honor spouses at the time of their achievement," Newberry said.

The certificate reads: "In recognition for unfailing support to military family"

"The Blue Star Award, while small, is simply a means to give a shout-out to the Fairchild spouses whose tremendous support makes our mission First Class day in and day out," Newberry said.

"It's a difficult lifestyle, adjusting to all the moves and deployments," added the colonel's spouse, Jill. "My husband and I realize military spouses are the glue that holds everything together. We want to recognize Fairchild spouses any way we can."

Nominations for the Blue Star Spouse Award are accepted via email through group commanders to the wing commander. Anyone wishing to nominate a spouse in their squadron should include a thorough description of why a nominee should be named the winner.
