Fairchild continues to be resilient Published July 10, 2013 By Senior Airman Dennis Ayres 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash., -- Fairchild accepted the challenge of attaining 80 percent completion of resiliency training by December 2013. With over 50 percent of the base's active duty members completing the course, Fairchild is well on its way to attaining it's goal. Resiliency in plain terms is rebounding or springing back. The Resiliency training class uses the word resiliency as a way of handling crisis or stressful situation. The training class challenges the learner to use different modes of thought when approaching a stressful scenario or crisis and how incorporating the Comprehensive Airmen Fitness Model can be beneficial. The CAFM focuses on the pillars of mental, social, physical and spiritual wellness as a way of staying vigilant when confronted with any difficult situation. "Resiliency training is designed to prepare our Airman to handle adverse events before those events occur."Master Sgt. Paula Barkhauer, master resilience trainer. "The truth is we all face challenges that require us to be resilient at least monthly, if not daily or weekly! So this training is intended to improve our real lives--as people, not just Airman." The object of the 8 hour Resiliency class is to prepare Airmen to handle adversity wherever they may find it. If stressful situations arise in the workplace or at home the class helps them to cope and react constructively in most instances. This training takes the approach of integrating entertaining videos as well as using group and open discussion as opposed to only using informational slides for teaching. Tech. Sgt Boal 92nd Air Refueling Wing Chapel NCO in charge attended the Resiliency Training and found it to be helpful. "I think this training is important for military or civilians because crisis can happen to anyone," said Boal, "I'm thankful we have this kind of training and I wish we had this earlier on in my career." Resiliency classes are conducted four times a month; two for members of the 92nd ARW, one for the First Term Airman Center and one for base newcomers. This class has also been offered to the Key Spouses on base with more dates projected for them in the future. To sign up, or to attain more information on the class contact Dawn Altmaier, Community Support Coordinator at (509) 247-5273.
