CFC kicks off with ‘Chili Cook-Off’ for Airmen, families

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Fairchild’s Combined Federal Campaign representatives hosted a “Chili Cook-Off” to promote the kick-off of the 2018 campaign at the base chapel Oct. 24.

The event gave those who attended the opportunity to engage with representatives from nine local charities and nonprofit organizations to learn more about them.

The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and provides all federal employees the opportunity to contribute to any charity or nonprofit organization in their catalog.

“We always look for people to give, especially in the local community,” said Master Sgt. Debra Spivey, 92nd Air Refueling Wing Equal Opportunity director. “The CFC allows these local organizations to come to base and explain what they stand for, which really strengthens the partnership and support we have with the local community.”

There are over 7,500 charities and nonprofit organizations worldwide in the 2018 CFC catalog, including nearly 180 in Washington and 13 within the Spokane area.

“The CFC allows Airmen to help provide for those in need,” said Capt. Alyssa Armstrong, 92nd Logistics Readiness Squadron Material Management Flight commander. “Whether it’s through donating time or money, the opportunity to pay it forward gives a sense of hope to those who need it the most.”

Fairchild promotes the CFC through a six-week campaign starting Oct. 22 and is scheduled to continue until to Nov. 30; however, those looking to contribute to charities and organizations through the CFC’s website can do so until January 2019.

The CFC has promoted local charities and nonprofit organizations for 57 years and has raised over $8.3 billion for a variety of charities and organizations worldwide.

“Last year, the goal was $100,000 in donations and this year, we want to reach that,” said Spivey. “It doesn’t matter what you give, whether it’s your time or a dollar, it shows support to both the local and base communities, strengthening our ties.”
