One step for CGOs, one giant leap for Fairchild

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Between meetings and supervisory tasks, an officer’s work day can be hectic. Everyday tasks can cause them to lose the opportunity to explore outside of their offices, squadrons or groups.

In 2015, Col. Brian McDaniel, former 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander, asked a few company grade officers to think of ways to get CGOs out of their offices to learn about different areas of the Fairchild mission.

CGOs then established the CGO Mission Orientation Brief, a week-long, stay-at-home temporary duty tour held quarterly that contains a myriad of opportunities for eight to 12 CGOs from every group on base, even the 336th Training Group, to learn the full spectrum of the Fairchild mission, as well as providing an opportunity for professional growth.

“The MOB is a great way for CGOs to understand different missions and realize the similarities of their challenges,” said 1st Lt. Zachary Baumann, 92nd Force Support Squadron chief of military personnel section.

A group of CGOs coordinate and run the MOB, keeping it up-to-date and continuously fighting for feedback to improve the itinerary.

The tour consists of visiting different squadrons and groups around base, getting hands-on experience with safety equipment and having lunch with some of Fairchild’s key members. Through this development opportunity, CGOs were able to gain a broader perspective about their piece of the Team Fairchild mission.

“The week-long Mission Orientation Brief was a unique experience,” said 1st Lt. Hope Mills, 92nd Maintenance Squadron flight commander. “It allowed each of us to understand what other's jobs are and how we all fit together to support Fairchild's mission. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks of your own job, so I appreciated the opportunity to get to know others from this base and to be reminded of the teamwork that happens daily here.”
