A week in history June 1-10 Published June 12, 2017 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Remembering the extensive impact Fairchild Air Force Base has had on the Air Force and operations around the world is important during our 75th year of providing responsive, precise air refueling and operational support for the full range of military operations.June 1, 1992Strategic Air Command is officially inactivated and Air Combat Command and Air Mobility Command are activated. The 92nd Wing was re-designated the 92nd Bomb Wing and was assigned to 12th Air Force. The B-52 Stratofortresses remained under the 92nd BW and the KC-135 Stratotanker squadrons were reassigned to AMC under the 453rd Operations Group while remaining at Fairchild.June 2, 1945The 10,000th B-17 Flying Fortress R-1820 engine repaired at the Spokane Air Technical Service command was completed. In all, nearly 11,000 engines were overhauled at an estimated savings to the government of $87 million.June 6, 1944The 92nd Bomb Group B-17s assisted the Normandy invasion by hitting gun emplacements, junctions and marshaling yards in the beachhead area. Throughout the D-Day invasion, the 92nd BG flew a total of 85 sorties with no losses of men or aircraft.June 9, 1964First KC-135 involvement in the Vietnam War: four KC-135s from Clark Air Base, Philippines, refueled eight F-100 Super Sabre strike aircraft during an attack against anti-aircraft batteries in Northern Laos.June 10, 1943The first B-17 arrived at the Spokane Air Depot and became the first bomber overhauled there.
