Fairchild remembers fallen heroes during National Police Week

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  Team Fairchild celebrated National Police Week May 15-19, with various events throughout the week honoring fallen heroes.

National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world make a trip to Washington, D.C. where they participate in a number of planned events which honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“Police Week allows a chance for the community to come together and interact with local law enforcement officers,” said Master Sgt. Moriah Washburn, 92nd Security Forces Squadron flight sergeant. “It presents us with a unique opportunity to showcase what we do on a day-to-day basis.”

The 92nd Security Forces Squadron hosted numerous events for Team Fairchild and their families to enjoy, including a kid-friendly Law Enforcement Exposition with an obstacle course, scavenger hunt and Military Working Dog demonstrations. The 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Spokane Police and SWAT were also present providing children with hands-on demonstrations of law enforcement robots and vehicles.

“Police Week gives participating agencies a chance to work together and coordinate to make these events happen,” Washburn said. “It provides us the opportunity to honor the memory and sacrifice of fallen officers and their families. Their dedication to their communities and country will never be forgotten.”
