Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day - Remember! Celebrate! Act!

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day occurs each year on the third Monday in Jan. MLK day is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service empowering individuals to strengthen their communities and create solutions to social problems.

During his lifetime, Dr. King encouraged all citizens to pursue the purpose and potential of our great nation.  He strived to realize the dream of equality. A nation that affords freedom and justice for all by applying the values of non-violence, to make our country a better place to live and creating what he called "The Beloved Community."

In Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community," people and communities would be united by inclusion, shared prosperity and peaceful conflict resolution.  The MLK Day of service is a way to channel Dr. King's life and teachings not just in our lives, but also into our community actions. 

The day gives us the opportunity to start the year off right by making a positive impact on not just Fairchild Air Force Base, but in our local communities as well. This year let us challenge ourselves to come together to volunteer and honor the legacy of Dr. King, who never stopped asking the question, "what are you doing for others?" The day of service is a moment to work together to fulfill Dr. King's vision for a better America - it's a day "on" not a day "off."
