Exceptional Family Members Program a success at base picnic

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  Editor's Note: This article is the third in a 4-part series on Comprehensive Airman Fitness. The goal of CAF is to help Airmen, Air Force civilians and family members become more resilient and better-equipped to deal with the rigors of military life by promoting mental, spiritual, social and physical fitness. This week's article focuses on social fitness.

The Airman & Family Readiness Center had a big presence at last week's base picnic including providing people with Exceptional Family Members Program information and resources that are available on and off base.

The EFMP is designed to provide support to military family members with special educational or medical needs. The program is offered by all branches of the military. The Air Force provides a variety of comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, community support, housing and personnel services to these families.

The A&FRC was excited to be part of the picnic and pleased with the outcome.

"Our event was very successful," said Steve McMullen, A&FRC EFMP Family Support coordinator. "We had a host of helping agencies from on base and from the greater Spokane area to answer questions and point people in the right direction."

Throughout the day, more than 200 people showed up at their displays and tables.

They also provided bouncers, water play, airbrush tattoo, face painting, bungee, trampoline and a balloon twister for patrons of the picnic.

"This was a multi-agency event where we collaborated with many helping agencies to provide accurate information to our families on all the resources available," McMullen said. "We were happy to be a part of this year's base picnic - overall, the day was both fun and informational."
