92nd ARW celebrates Wingman Day

Airmen and civilians alike set aside their work for a few hours Nov. 6 to participate in Wingman Day, a base-wide effort to remind everyone of the importance of looking out for each other and being a good "wingman."

Each squadron was responsible for organizing their own briefings, which focused on such issues as suicide and sexual assault awareness, responsible alcohol use, making ethical decisions, and the importance of getting to know each other.

Wing staff agencies, for instance, met at the Education Center for their morning Wingman Day activities.

Dan Simmons, 92nd Air Refueling Wing historian, led an activity encouraging people to learn each others' names and a little bit about each other.

"In this electronic age it's easy for us to just sit at our desks and only become acquainted with an electronic signature block coming from another office," he said. "As wingmen, it's important for us to get to know the person sending that electronic message. Personal relationships are key to us conducting effective wing business on a day-to-day basis."

For the activity, each person was given a blank sheet of paper divided into small boxes. Each person filled in the first box with their name and a small drawing illustrating something about their personality. They then exchanged papers with five to six other people, introduced themselves, and explained what the picture meant.

"I thought it was a worthwhile activity," said 1st Lt. Matthew Beck, a financial services officer. "I met a few people in the wing that I didn't know and learned a little about them."

Wingman Day activities continued with a 2 p.m. wing-wide exercise session in Hangar 2 of Building 2050.

Colonel Scott Hanson, 92nd ARW commander, gave a short speech, followed by wing stretching and calisthenics. The day concluded with refreshments.

"Wingman Day is an opportunity to review lessons learned, focus on special-emphasis issues, and show appreciation to our Air Force members and their families," writes Lt. Gen. Christopher Kelly, Air Mobility Command vice commander, in a memo on Wingman Day.

"The goal of Wingman Day is to reinforce awareness of responsible choices and underscore the importance of care for ourselves, our families, and others," the general wrote.
