Communications squadron creates Troop Care Packages Published Nov. 28, 2006 By 2nd Lt. Noel Bacnis 92nd ARW Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Airmen from the Communications Squadron sent a bit of home to troops fighting overseas the first week of November by making care packages for them. With the help of Jan Sass, founder of U.S. Troop Care Package, Airmen filled the packages with pillows, snacks, toiletry items, reading materials, calling cards and any other items donated to the organization. "I was deployed last year and I know how it felt to receive something from home, I just want to do the same in return," said Staff Sgt. Malik Skeete, 92nd CS Global Reach Communications Element member. "I hope they recognize how much we appreciate what they are doing," said Linda Miles the new Airmen and Family Readiness Center director. Donations have come from all over the United States, as well as other countries such as London and Guam, in support of the troops. "We have never asked for donations, I can't explain it, it's a God thing," said founder Jan Sass. Ms. Sass makes it clear that she does not do this for recognition. "I don't do this for a thank you or a pat on the back, as long as I know in my heart I am helping the troops," she said. "It makes you feel wonderful knowing that you are helping the troops...this is a good way to remember the folks deployed and show them we care and they're in our thoughts and prayers," said Ms. Miles. U.S. Troop Care Package has more than 1,000 volunteers from the ages of 2 to 99. "We have projects for everyone," said Ms. Sass. Volunteers work out of the headquarters and their personal homes, with many more supporters, including those from Canada, asking how they can help. "It's overwhelming to see all these people step forward," Ms. Sass said. "We are so appreciative of our troops; it's so hard to put into words." The packages will go to U.S. servicemembers who are recommended by their leadership.
