National Volunteer Recognition week, April 15-21, is set aside to honor those who give to their community unselfishly. To bring attention to the accomplishments of Fairchild volunteers, the Airman and Family Readiness Center is hosting a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at Club Fairchild 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. May 1.

At Fairchild, volunteers fulfill a wide variety of community service activities. Tutoring and mentoring youth at Michael Anderson Elementary, serving young Airman at the monthly Single Airmen's Dinner, and answering office phones or taking messages are just a few examples.

And volunteers' reasons for giving their time vary just as much. Terry Cassidy, who volunteers with children through Special Olympics, field trips and other activities, has been volunteering for more than four years and said she still enjoys "being a part of children's lives. I really like seeing the smiles on their faces."

William Stamper, who has been volunteering for more than six years, puts his sports talent to action with his time. As a Little League soccer, baseball and basketball coach, he also gets some college credit for his time, along with the "enjoyment of working with children."

To attend the luncheon and pay tribute to the people on base who perform so many needed services, contact your first sergeant. For more information, call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 247-2246.
