A cluster of first term Airmen arrived at the base commissary May 10 to test their grocery shopping knowledge at an event geared toward raising awareness of what the commissary has to offer.

The event was held in recognition of Commissary Awareness Month.

"This event was held to promote smart shopping and healthy eating," said Eric Quantock, store director. "We wanted to focus on the first term Airmen because they are new and many of them don't know the benefits of shopping at the commissary."

Upon arriving at the commissary the 11 Airmen, along with Tech. Sgt. Eliseo Dumlao, First Term Airmen Center NCOIC, were split into teams of three. Each team competed against the other to gain the ultimate prize: a $25 shopping spree at the commissary.

The events consisted of trivia on nutritious foods, bulk-item shopping, a search for types of meat and bowling down paper towel rolls with grapefruit.

The shopping sprees were awarded to the team that accrued the most points from the events. The winning team included Airman 1st Class Jocelyn Ford, 92nd Communications Squadron still photographer, Airman 1st Class Cristy Lagazo, 92nd Aeromedical Dental Squadron public health technician, and Sergeant Dumlao.

It didn't matter who won the shopping spree. Everyone had a smile on their face, and they were learning about the commissary, said Sergeant Dumlao.

Throughout the event, Mr. Quantock provided bits of information about the commissary to the first term Airmen to provide them with a greater understanding of the advantages to grocery shopping on base.

"I just wanted to make sure the Airmen had a good time and learned a little more about the commissary," said Mr. Quantock.

At the end of the event, the Airmen were served breakfast and received a bag of goodies from the commissary for their participation.
