Doing less with less: AFSO21 training Published June 4, 2007 By 2nd Lt. Noellani SM Bacnis 92nd Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- The idea is to do less with less. Air Force Smart Operations 21 training held here May 31 offered Airmen helpful suggestions that challenged them to attack waste problems and seek opportunities for improvement. The vision of AFSO21 training is to establish a work environment in which various tools and techniques are used by Airmen to successfully change daily operating styles to improve processes Air Force wide. "It is important that we focus on reducing waste," said Maj. Tom Campbell, wing AFSO21 representative, during an AFSO21 training session. According to the AFSO21 Playbook, it is the Airmen's responsibility to understand their role in reducing waste and develop the ability to effect change by continuously learning new ways to improve processes in their workspaces. Major Campbell hopes through monthly training that Airmen develop a culture which promotes elimination of waste and reduction of cycle times of all products and services throughout the Air Force. "Due to limited resources and increased requirements we must eliminate waste and reduce non-valued activities," said Major Campbell. Each group is required to send representatives to monthly training sessions to encourage waste management.
