Base elementary school classes compete in recycling contest

FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. --  More than two tons! That's how much material was recycled by students from Michael Anderson Elementary School as part of a school recycling contest June 2.

Students were asked to bring their recycling from home to the Recycle Center on base. After it was weighed, they were then encouraged to sort their recycling into different types of material such as paper, aluminum cans, cardboard and newspaper.

Sixty-six students representing all seven grades at the school participated in the event. Teachers also brought in recycling to support their classes.

Thanks to the teenage volunteers from the base Teen Center, the contest was a big success. Volunteers and students alike learned about recycling and the importance of conserving our natural resources.

One student brought in 368 pounds of material, primarily newspaper that he had been saving for more than one year. His recycling efforts, along with other students in his class, won the contest by recycling the most material by weight.

In total, Kathy Shellabarger's 2nd grade class recycled 546 pounds of material. The class will be rewarded with a pizza party by the Recycle Center contractor, Olgoonik Inc., who hosted the recycling contest.
